NEW WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT - Simon Allen Jazz Improv Workshop - Making the Changes

In partnership with @swanagejazzfestival

10th July 2026 - 10am - 4pm

Suitable for: front line instruments (sax, trumpet, trombone etc), drums, keys, bass, guitar

Whether you are new to Improvising or confident soloing over changes, Simon will offer tips and advice on how to get the most out of your playing, covering aspects including:
– Rhythmic and Melodic Motific development
– Developing harmonic language through chord tone / chord scale improvisation
– Group interaction
– Making your warm up Musical! And directly linking it to your practise

@simon_allen_saxophone, as a multi-instrumentalist (sax, drums, bass, piano), will be working with a small group of front line players and also be giving the rhythm section players special attention too! Simon will give every rhythm instrument aspects to work on at the same time as working with front line instruments on improvising, focusing on group interaction etc.

Also, Swanage Jazz Festival will give a 50% discount on the Friday ticket – starts 4pm – to workshop participants. Discount code to be sent out separately.

The Jazz Africa Workshop....a note from Basil Hodge....

The main aim of the workshop is to teach the musicians to play African influenced music on their respective instruments as part of a band, finishing with a final performance of the pieces at the end of day two. There will be four pieces in total.

There will also be a session where all musicians learn to play:
a) a percussion instrument e,g shakers, Djembe, tambourine etc
b) polyrhythms by creating 4 bar ostinatos

Also, a look at videos of the pioneers and main artists of African music (Afrobeat, Highlife, Township etc). Discuss the styles and influences.
